OVERVIEW
The City of Whirling Dervishes
Having been the capital of Seljuks from 12th century to 13th century, Konya stands as one of the biggest cultural centers in Turkey. In this era of cultural, political and religious change, the mystic known as Mevlana (Rumi), formed a Sufi order known in the West as “The Whirling Dervishes.” Konya was known in the Roman period as “Iconium.”
This city, where the first known settlement, urbanization and animal taming took place, has been hosting various civilizations since Catalhoyuk, taking its place among the Neolithic Areas, in the UNESCO World Heritage List. One of the most financially developed cities in Turkey, Konya attracts visitors not only with its unique natural and historic beauties, but also with its amazing cuisine. “Etli Ekmek”, a pizza like dish, is one of the most famous dishes of Turkish cuisine. Konya, the homeland of “Etli Ekmek”, is also the best spot to taste it.
