OVERVIEW :
Located 11 miles north of Denizli, named “Holy City” in the archeological literature, the ancient city of Hierapolis was built on the same premises as Pamukkale Travertines. Being in UNESCO World Herirtage List and is without an equal, found within the unique 2500 year old Hierapolis, The Ancient Theatre has a distinct and crucial spot among the Roman-era Anatolian theatres with its mythological reliefs, spectacular stage building, and sitting steps. It is known that the city was founded by the king of Bergama, Eumenes II in 2nd century BC, and the name Hierapolis, was derived from Hiera, the wife of of the legendary founder of Bergama, Telephos. The word “hiera” means “holy” in Hellen language. Hierapolis served as a thermal health center in this period and for thousands of years, was visited by people coming from every corner of Anatolia, seeking health and beauty, as people still do today.
